About the SOCRAT Project
SOCRAT (Socializing Craft & Contemporary Art for Sustainable Tourism) is a cross-border project supported through the Interreg VI-A Italy–Croatia Programme 2021–2027.
The project explores how culture, creativity, and local knowledge can contribute to more sustainable forms of tourism in the Adriatic area. Rather than focusing only on seasonal coastal tourism, SOCRAT promotes tourism experiences rooted in local skills, artistic practices, and the everyday life of communities.
A central concept of the project is a model of cooperation linking contemporary art, traditional crafts (cultural and creative industries), and civil society. Through this approach, SOCRAT examines how cultural and creative practices can support social cohesion and long-term territorial development.
Key challenges addressed
SOCRAT responds to several common challenges in the region:
strong seasonality of tourism flows
limited cooperation between the cultural sector and local governance structures
the need for greater involvement of artists and creative professionals in tourism-related initiatives
pressures of mass tourism that may weaken local identity and the relationship between residents and visitors.
More information about the SOCRAT project is available on the official project page.
